Teen Accused of Changing Grades,
Accessing Personal Information

The confidential computer system of the Elk Grove School District has been hacked into, again.

Laguna Creek High School authorities confirmed Tuesday that a student has been suspended and that criminal charges are possible after personal and confidential information, including grades for thousands of students and the Social Security numbers of school employees may have been accessed.

Officials said that the 17-year-old boy had obtained passwords and used the system to change his grades, among other things.

"The student information system is what we use to record student grades, and it's not appropriate for students to be changing grades," said Elk Grove School District spokesman Jim Elliot.

Elliot said that the student could be expelled from the school and possibly face fines and jail time if law enforcement gets involved.

A school report says that the teen also changed phone numbers, making it difficult for school officials to contact his parents. His report card shows A's in every class he has taken for the past two years and an impressive 4.1 grade point average.

Investigators believe the boy did all the work from the school's computer lab during class.

The school is now undergoing an extensive security audit, which caught the latest alleged hacker. The audit was ordered following a November incident at Sheldon High School, where students allegedly hacked in and gained access to the same type of information.

"We have taken steps since the last incident to make our system more secure and safer, and we continue to look for ways to make it safer," Elliot said.

The student claims, according to officials, that he got into the system after hearing a teacher say his computer password out loud in a classroom.
