Plea gets accused molester jail time, five years probation

By Lauren Keene -- Davis Enterprise

A former Davis soccer coach and referee accused of molesting three teenage boys was sentenced Monday to five years of probation and a stay in the Yolo County Jail.

Jeffrey Allen Hicks, 37, pleaded no contest in March to two felony charges -- oral copulation of a child under age 18 and distribution of pornography to a minor.  In exchange for the plea, the Yolo County district attorney's office dismissed 43 other molest and pornography-related charges.

On Monday, Judge Stephen Mock sentenced Hicks to five years' probation and 270 days in the Yolo County Jail, at least 70 of which must be served in custody,  Deputy District Attorney Patricia Lenzi said.  The others may be served in jail, through home arrest or in a work project, or a combination of the three.

Hicks was ordered to surrender for his jail term on June 15.

Davis police arrested Hicks on June 23, 2003, following a three-week investigation that began when a confidential informant reported that Hicks had pornographic images stored on his home computer.

Investigators said they later learned that Hicks had molested three boys -- ages 14 to 17 -- he had met through his affiliations with both the American Youth Soccer Organization and the Davis Youth Soccer League.  Hicks reportedly provided alcohol to the boys and exposed them to pornography at his Spruce Lane home between 1999 and last summer.  Police said the boys consented to sex acts with Hicks.

"I believe this was an appropriate resolution in this case.  There were multiple victims, but the facts of the case were unique," Lenzi said.  "It was the wish of all the victims in the case to find a resolution, and they all seemed to be comfortable with this outcome."

Hicks' attorney, Roger Hahn of Woodland, could not be reached for comment about the plea agreement or sentencing.

In addition to serving jail and probation time, Hicks also must register as a sex offender as part of his plea agreement, Lenzi said.  He also was ordered to have no contact with the victims or other minors, and he is prohibited from possessing pornography, drugs, or alcohol.

Hicks had served as a volunteer coach and referee with AYSO and later worked as a referee for DYSL.  Officials from both organizations said last year that they had received no complaints about his behavior around children during his affiliations with them.
