Indictment in Identity Theft

Modesto Bee

A federal grand jury has indicted Marvin Dewayne Hammons, 38, of Turlock on charges of identity theft, mail theft and unauthorized use of access devices.

Police arrested Hammons almost a year ago at his home; the indictment came out June 17. According to reports, officers responding to a call of shots fired found Hammons sitting at a computer, making a forged California driver's license.

Authorities said Kipp Loving, a Turlock police detective assigned to the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force, and Stanislaus County sheriff's Detective John Walker, with the help of postal inspector Dennis Cunningham, contacted more than 100 mail theft victims in putting together the case against Hammons.

He is being held at Fresno County Jail pending further court proceedings. Officers said they also found numerous bags of mail that had been stolen the previous night from residences throughout Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin counties. If convicted, Hammons could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
